How It Works

1. Choose a Preset or Start Custom — Pick from one-click presets like "Block All AI" or "Publisher Recommended" to get started fast. Or start from scratch with "Custom."

2. Toggle Individual Crawlers — Fine-tune your configuration with per-bot toggles organized by category: AI Training, AI Search & Retrieval, Traditional Search, and Social Preview bots.

3. Get Your Output — The live preview updates in real time. Grab your output as robots.txt, meta tags, Apache .htaccess, or Nginx config. Copy to clipboard or download as a file.

Why Block AI Crawlers?

  • Protect original content. AI training crawlers may use your writing, research, or creative work without attribution or compensation.
  • Reduce server load. AI crawlers can be aggressive — GPTBot alone accounts for roughly 30% of all AI crawler traffic.
  • Control how your content is used. Block training bots while keeping search bots active so your content still appears in search results.
  • Legal and compliance alignment. The EU AI Act and Copyright Directive recognize robots.txt as a valid machine-readable opt-out mechanism.

Three Layers of Protection

Layer Covers Enforcement
robots.txt All crawlers that check it Advisory (honor-based)
Meta tags HTML pages Advisory, increasingly recognized
HTTP headers All file types (PDFs, images, APIs) Advisory, server-enforced delivery

This tool generates output for all three so you can implement layered protection in minutes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does robots.txt actually stop AI crawlers?
Most major AI companies — OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Meta, Perplexity — publicly state that their bots respect robots.txt. However, compliance is voluntary. Some lesser-known crawlers may ignore it. That is why we recommend using meta tags and HTTP headers as additional layers.
Will blocking AI crawlers hurt my SEO?
No. Traditional search engine bots (Googlebot, Bingbot) are separate from AI training bots. You can block all AI crawlers while keeping your site fully indexed in Google and Bing. Our presets make this easy.
What is the difference between GPTBot and ChatGPT-User?
GPTBot collects data for OpenAI's model training. ChatGPT-User fetches pages in real time when a ChatGPT user asks a question that requires live web data. Blocking GPTBot stops training usage. Blocking ChatGPT-User stops your content from appearing in ChatGPT's live answers.
How often should I update my robots.txt for AI bots?
New AI crawlers appear regularly. We maintain a database of 30+ known bots and update the tool as new ones are identified. Bookmark this page and revisit when you want to check for new bots.
Do I need technical skills to use this tool?
No. Toggle the bots, copy the output, and paste it into your site. If you can edit a text file, you can deploy a robots.txt.

About This Tool

The AI Crawler Control Panel is a free tool built by Effloow as part of our Tool Forge collection. Our bot database is informed by the community-maintained ai-robots-txt project (3,800+ GitHub stars) and supplemented with bots identified through crawl log analysis.

The tool runs entirely in your browser. No data is sent to our servers. Your configuration is generated client-side and stays on your machine.

Last updated: April 2026. Bot database reflects known AI crawlers as of Q1 2026.
